Dear friends,

It is with great honor that I receive your interest in the Kaiut Yoga method.

I began developing this method almost 20 years ago inspired by the study and integration of multiple healing arts but really, this method was inspired back when I was five years old. A childhood accident led to chronic pain that plagued me each and every day.

As I continue to research and refine the Kaiut Yoga method, I am truly amazed at the results. It warms my heart to see many people around the world find peace from chronic aches or pains, lessen the impact of old injuries, or simply minimize the impact of our modern lifestyle on the deterioration of their bodies.

My ambition is for yoga to make as much common sense to people as brushing their teeth. It is my wish for everyone to be able to enjoy life and live to their fullest potential, for as long as possible. And who knows how long that may be? I believe the possibility to age gracefully is enormous.

I would be delighted if you were to join me in one of our teacher training programs or to perhaps experience this method in one of our many workshops or retreats.

Method Overview - History of the Kaiut Method

People often ask me what inspired Kaiut Yoga. For me to share that story I need to go back to my early childhood. Back to when I was 5 years old.

I was playing at my cousin’s house one day and my father, who worked in the military, came to pick me up. One of my young cousins found his way into my father’s car and pulled out a gun from the backseat. Thinking it was a toy, he pointed the gun at me and shot me in the hip.

I can tell you this now but I would not have been able to for many years. I was simply unaware. It had been blocked from my consciousness and in fact still is. My parents never spoke of the accident, possibly because this happened during the time of military rule in Brazil and nothing could be said; perhaps because the accident would have been taboo in the social context of the time; perhaps because of the emotional impact of the trauma on them personally. I don’t think I will ever really know but it also doesn’t really matter.

All my childhood memories are of things that happened after the accident. Any memory I have from before the accident isn’t real. It’s the result of photographs that have been shared with me, and stories I have been told. I remember nothing. With all the silence surrounding the accident however, no one knew that I had no memory. And no one understood what all that silence would lead to down the road.

By the time I was about 10 years old, I needed frequent massage treatment. I had back pain, a stiff neck, and so on. Inspired by the need to manage my own pain I became a chiropractor. However, standing for 40 to 50 hours a week working as a chiropractor made the pain worse; my back and cervical pain was horrible.

So I tried yoga. When I was 29 years old, after practicing hatha for many years, my great teacher shared with me the reason for all my physical issues. He told me about my childhood accident that led to all this pain, and like a thunderbolt, suddenly everything became clear.

That insight changed my life.

In the early years of developing Kaiut Yoga, I tested my method first on myself and then my son, who by a perfect act of nature was born with physical limitations that made him eager for yoga. I then practiced with my family and anyone else open to it. It worked—everyone improved.

With enough research and practice behind me, I took my new concept to students. First I offered my method to only ten students, then a hundred, and then a thousand and so on. Proportionately the results were amazing. I saw and continue to see results and hear reports of significantly reduced pain in people who practice Kaiut Yoga.

Today I am sure I still know almost nothing about our bodies. But I am also sure that when my students are on the floor in my yoga positions I have scored my greatest goal. I am sure of the regenerating potential of the human body that often lies dormant and untapped. I am sure we have only a glimpse of what we can achieve.

Today, I can look at my x-rays, speak to experts in various professions and it all makes sense to me. While I will never fully recover from that accident so many years ago, I am eternally grateful for it. Without it, I would not be who I am today and my work would not exist.

Now when I see the hip x-ray of one of my students I understand instantly what is puzzling to most of the other health professionals they have seen. In their x-ray I see my x-ray. In their pain I see my pain. And I see the potential to heal. The human potential for recovery is incredible. Each and every day, I see in myself all the changes that have allowed me to now live without the pain that plagued me for so many years. I see my ability to move freely in a way that shouldn’t be possible given my body’s history.

I feel fortunate to be able to integrate this understanding of my own pain and discomfort with my education. As a chiropractor, I understand the skeletal structure. As a qualified massage therapist, I understand muscles and muscle chains. Through my polarity studies, I understand energy flow. And as a yoga teacher and practitioner, I analyze every yoga position I know through many different lenses.

I have studied the history of yoga through the lenses of modern biomechanical understanding, my own story, and last but not least, the use of the human body in modern society. From my studies, I have come to realize that the way we use our bodies today is more harmful than ever before.

We now are fortunate to have a way to slow, if not reverse the damaging effects our bodies suffer from daily life. It brings me great joy to know that people around the world are finding solace in my work. We have the original Kaiut Yoga School in Curitiba Brazil as well as several studios around the country. Kaiut Yoga has a strong following in the US and is growing in Canada. And there are Kaiut teachers and practitioners in France, Ireland, Ecuador, Israel and Australia.

Method Overview - Why a Therapeutic Approach?

Each of us is born with a certain genetic code. We are all perfectly imperfect. And then we layer on top of that the karma of life – all the life circumstances, both physical and emotional, that reside in our systems. Over time, those life circumstances start to impact our pain level, our potential to move, our degree of comfort, our ability to think clearly, and our capacity to handle emotionally challenging moments in life.

In addition, we modern people have a new challenge: we sit too much. Chairs (and their many variations found in cars, buses, cinemas, planes, boardrooms, etc.) are where we spend most of our lives. Being seated feels nice and comfortable but, in fact, sitting restricts and blocks what nature designed for us in our bodies. And we pay a price – a price for prioritizing convenience over the functionality of our bodies. We tend to restrict ourselves statically by keeping our joints in one comfortable position (as with sitting) but we also limit ourselves with our activities: through repetitive motions like running, cycling, swimming, or even writing or typing.

Whether static or active, the more accustomed we become to these repeated body patterns the more likely we are to run into problems.

The muscles become conditioned to these patterns and we lose the full range of motion we once had which, as we age, leads to pain and injuries. Getting out of bed a little differently one morning for example, may now cause you to “throw your back out.” Trying to catch yourself as you trip and fall one day may lead to the sudden use of a joint in a way that you haven’t used it in a very long time. The more unfamiliar that movement pattern becomes to your body, the more likely it is that you will injure yourself over time.

But modern society doesn’t just affect us physically, it affects us energetically as well. Modern life has a certain emotional cadence to it. Along with the wonders of the industrial and technological revolution have come a pace of life that stresses our bodily systems. The desire for instant gratification and our ‘more-bigger-faster-better’ mentality brings unnecessary stress to many of us.

Kaiut Yoga is designed to work with the body to counterbalance our genetic code, life karma and modern lifestyle. This method, designed to work from the joints, has the ability to increase our range of motion, preserve the natural function of our bodily systems, and better regulate the ‘chemical soup’ found in our brains and bodies.

Through my ongoing research into the intersection of modern movement patterns with the classic yoga positions of ancient times, I am continually evolving Kaiut Yoga and discovering new ways to support people who want to reach their fullest potential in life.

As society evolves, yoga needs to evolve. As yoga evolves, the potential for the human body increases. Isn’t it time to expect more from yoga?

Method Overview - The Benefits Of The Kaiut Method

People often ask why should I do yoga? What will it do for me beyond a good stretch or a moment of peace on the mat? Is there any lasting effect?

When yoga is practiced with a focus on the joints along with a broader functional perspective, there can be positive, long-lasting effects on the body and mind. Kaiut Yoga works to slowly dissolve blockages in and around the joints. Resolving these restrictions has a resonating effect throughout the body—blood flow and energy is enhanced throughout. These systemic effects in turn, improve the health of the joints, bones, and muscles. Reducing the restrictions in our joints will positively influence all bodily functions stimulating an ongoing cycle of improved health!

Kaiut Yoga positively impacts our circulatory system, our digestive system, our nervous system and so on. Resolving that hip issue might help your digestion. Resolving that shoulder and neck problem may help your brain function so that you can think more clearly.

This practice is largely about biomechanical health–your freedom of movement. It has been designed to help you work through chronic pain and injuries, as well as general aches and stiffness. As such it is a method that often has little appeal to young people who have not yet experienced chronic physical pain.

Kaiut Yoga helps return and maintain the body’s optimal structure and functionality. It’s about freedom of movement and flow of energy. It’s about keeping us healthy, mobile and pain-free for as long as possible. It’s about our human potential to maximize our quality of life.

Method Overview - Who Can Practice This Method?

Everyone. Kaiut Yoga is designed and taught for every body and every body type.

It is a common belief that yoga is for people that are super flexible. Consequently, it is often flexible women and agile men who are drawn to the practice because they get “good” at it quickly. It’s a lesser known fact that flexibility does not equate to comfort. In fact, extreme flexibility can, and often does lead to injury as we age.

Kaiut Yoga is designed with long-term goals in mind. It is for those who want to keep their body functioning well as long as possible.

It is for inflexible people and those with limited mobility.  It is for men who are naturally less flexible than women.

It is for anyone starting to feel the affects of aging, in body or in mind. It is for anyone who wants to delay feeling ”old.”

Kaiut Yoga is for people with chronic aches, pains, and general stiffness. It is for those with old injuries and limiting movement patterns that affect their quality of life. It is for people contemplating joint replacement(s). It is for those wanting to delay surgery such as a hip or knee replacement as long as possible.

This yoga is for people that have experienced significant trauma in their lives. It is for those with the memory of negative emotional experiences still “living” in their bodies.

And yes, Kaiut Yoga is even for the super flexible and the hyper mobile. Over time it works to give them the feedback they need to regain stability and avoid injury.

Method Overview - Kaiut Yoga As A Profession

A joint survey conducted by Yoga Alliance and The Yoga Journal in 2016 indicated that there were 36.7 million US yoga practitioners, up from 20.4 million in 2012. That’s nearly a 50% increase in only four years. Students spend 16 billion dollars a year on yoga classes, gear and equipment. Needless to say, yoga is a large and growing market.

Yoga studios have “Starbucked” their way into many metropolitan areas, with yoga franchises expanding at a feverish rate. In the last 30 years, yoga has gone from “grassroots” to mainstream—so much so that one might begin to wonder if it has become a saturated market. Is there really room for another yoga teacher, let alone another yoga studio?

This exponential growth has been fueled in large part by adapting yoga to mainstream trends like group fitness, aerobics, Pilates, and dance.

But in truth, yoga has never really been about the body.

Enter Kaiut Yoga, a practice that uses the body to access the mind. Mainstream yoga has paved the way for this unique practice. If you’ve practiced Kaiut Yoga, you get it. Training Programs - What to Expect

First of all, come to this training expecting more from yoga. As you can see, the Kaiut Yoga method is unique in many ways and so is the learning experience for teachers. There is no prior teaching experience required and you need not be a practicing yoga student! You just have to come with desire to learn and a mind open to see your body and those around you in an entirely different light. The way in which you see the body and how you understand the potential for optimal health will be challenged.

Francisco’s teaching style is nonlinear. In fact, it is circular by design so that concepts are introduced, set aside and reintroduced later in a different context. It is exciting to watch your own mind be challenged along with your fellow students. It’s invigorating to see faces light up the room as life-changing concepts are absorbed.

Come to this training prepared to learn with fellow students who have a variety of body types, personalities and ages—each with a unique history of patterns and injuries. Kaiut Yoga teacher trainings are inspired by this diversity. Why not? If you plan to teach, it’s what you will see in your classes. As a gradate of this Level One training, you will embark on this lifelong journey to not only feel the yoga in your own body, but you will learn to see and sense how it impacts others. This is a skill that you will refine for the rest of your life.

Students are often surprised to learn that not only an understanding of anatomy and physiology is not necessary, but that it is not taught. Kaiut Yoga is about the student experience, the teacher’s ability to create that experience, and the predictable results that come with it. What more could you want? We wouldn’t want academia to get in the way of real learning! Ask lots of questions and watch yourself grow emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

There is homework—about 250 hours of it in addition to the 300 contact hours in the teacher training. Mostly in the form of practice, the homework allows you to integrate what you learn in class. You will be asked to practice the sequences in certain ways and journal your findings as you experience the changes taking place in your body.

Students will be given 100 prewritten sequences in groups of 30 (or so) which is why the Intensive Learning Format is organized around three meetings. The initial 100 sequences are the heart and foundation of the Kaiut Method. Francisco Kaiut has tested and refined these class-plans over a period of nearly 20 years. Needless to say, they work. But the sequences have little value in untrained hands. It’s not only what is taught, it’s how it’s taught! Come to this training to learn how to teach a yoga class that is unique to each person in the room.

Training Programs - The Intensive Teacher Training Program (ITT: Level One)

The Intensive Teacher Training (ITT: Level One) program is designed for the teacher trainee or Kaiut Yoga devotee that prefers a concentrated learning methodology. Held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, this format is comprised of three, 8-day segments that can be completed in one year. These three segments, along with assigned homework, need not be taken consecutively or in a specific order and you may attend as many or as few segments as you like.

Join us in Toronto for this unique learning experience. Immerse yourself in a meaningful yoga practice in the heart of an energetic and diverse city filled with amazing food, theatre, sports and entertainment opportunities with Niagara Falls less than 90 minutes away. Accommodation of all types is easily available as is public transport.

Training Programs - The Extensive Teacher Training Program (ETT: Level One)

The Extensive Teacher Training (ETT: Level One) is designed for the Kaiut Yoga trainee who prefers learning in smaller, more frequent chunks of time. Like the ITT, along with the homework, this program can be completed in one year but it more closely simulates Francisco’s Brazilian training. There are 300 contact hours that that create a very rich and personal learning environment. Of the nine segments, Francisco will be present in Boulder for five of them: the opening week, the closing week and three 4-day weekends in between. For the remaining four segments, Francisco will be teaching via live teleconference technology. He will also be represented for parts of the training by two of his most seasoned North American teachers who will be present in Boulder to help facilitate the on-site learning and share their experience and success with the Kaiut method.

Located in Boulder, Colorado, Yoga Loft is situated near the foot of Boulder’s famous Flatirons which provide an inspirational backdrop to the practice. The studio is surrounded by great restaurants and coffee shops, with two full service grocery stores nearby. Locker rooms and showers are also available.
